Turn The Tide On Plastic

Eliminating single use plastic is a worldwide initiative that gets a tremendous amount of press.  Educating yourself and then taking small steps to improve your own footprint isn’t difficult to do.

To help educate and to encourage there has been an active town wide program here in Madison for a few months that has been adopted quickly and effectively.   Our “Turning The Tide on Plastic” is not mandated but has seen a lot of success.  Chamber of Commerce executive director Eileen Banisch stated “we want people to want to do this, not have to do this”.  Many of our local businesses have taken steps to immediately eliminate plastic products from their offering.   For example, don’t be surprised if the straw in your water is a paper straw and don’t be offended if you’re encouraged stop using single use bags from the grocery store.

Because of our proximity on Long Island Sound we have a very keen interest on the amount of pollution that we can easily eliminate.  I’m very lucky in life that I get to walk the beach every day all year round.   I long for the day that I don’t have to pick up garbage while I’m walking.

Here at the Scranton Seahorse Inn we are taking steps to help too.

  • We have a 5-gallon bottle of water dispenser that we encourage guests to use to refill their reusable water bottles
  • Our soap is hand made locally and wrapped in recycled paper
  • Beginning this summer our toiletries and amenities will be packaged in recycled and recyclable material.

I’d love to hear what you’re doing as an individual, family or town to help Turn The Tide on Plastic.

We look forward to seeing you at The Scranton Seahorse Inn soon.

Have You Discovered Chia?

Chia Breakfast Porridge

Recipe

Chia seeds have amazing nutritional value and are high in antioxidants, Omega-3 and calcium.   There are a variety of seeds on the store shelves and I tend to buy the black seeds vs the white seeds.  This base recipe that follows is gluten free and dairy free and very flexible as far as what you add to the base.   I use almond milk but you can use soy, coconut, or rice milk.  I’ll be honest the only milk I haven’t used it whole milk (the chia has a lot of calcium already!).  I always try to use what ever fruit is in season once we hit spring time in Connecticut but you of course should use what ever flavor combination you love.

For each serving:

  • 1/2 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
  • 3 Tablespoons chia seeds
  • pinch of your favorite spice – cinnamon, cardamom, ginger
  • 1 T honey or syrup (optional)

Combing all ingredients into a mason jar or other container that has a lid with a tight seal.     Shake it like mad for a few minutes.  Put in refrigerator over night.

In the morning give it a good stir and add your nuts, fruits, coconut, or what ever your imagination tells you.  Consider using maple syrup in place of honey or cardamon in place of cinnamon.   If you try this and create a combination that you love let me know and I’ll try it out here.

Some popular toppings here include:   blueberry and lemon zest, mango and coconut flakes, fresh cherry and almonds.

I make about 15 – 20 servings at a time and it stores well in the refrigerator for at least a week.  Just be sure to stir it each time as the honey or syrup will settle.

Don’t Miss Philadelphia

Philadelphia is just 4 hours from Madison, Connecticut and should definitely be on your itinerary if you’re touring the east coast.  Our guest writer Dylan has included this highlights of this great city in his 3rd and final piece on cities to visit when traveling in this area.   A 4 hour drive makes Philly too long to make it a day trip but using Madison and the Scranton Seahorse Inn as your home base is easy.  We always offer to let you check out for a day or two and store your luggage with us.  Coming back to relax on our beach and  reminisce is a good way to round out your trip.

Part 3 of 3

Philadelphia, PA

The Southern-most city on our quick road trip guide, Philadelphia also has plenty of things to see and do. Known as the “Home of Rocky Marciano” and “Where the Signing of the Declaration of Independence took place”, this is one city that you do not want to miss if you have four hours to spare from Madison.

City of Brotherly LoveOne of the aspects that Philadelphia is known for is its influence in the arts. Therefore, you must come explore the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where you will find everything from sculptures, portraits, and landscape paintings. However, before you come explore this amazing museum, do not forget to take a selfie in front of the Rocky sculpture. The sculpture is located at the bottom of the stairs to the art museum.

Similar to Boston and New York, Philadelphia has its own historical influence too. One of the must sees in the city is to visit Independence Hall. It is important to note that entrance to the hall is by ticket only. It is important to get your tickets early.

You may be hungry after all that walking around in the city. You also may hear to either go to Pat’s or Geno’s Steaks. However, if you want to go where the locals go, then head on over to Jim’s Steaks. This family-owned restaurant has been a local favorite since 1939 when it first opened its first location in West Philadelphia.

Philadelphia is also home to some of the top schools in the country. Some of the universities in the area are Pennsylvania, Drexel, and Temple , which are all near to each other.

Like Boston and New York, Philadelphia also has their sports crowd too. The city is home to the Eagles(football), Flyers(Hockey), 76ers(basketball), and Phillies(baseball).

Given the central location of Madison, Connecticut, it is fairly easy to take a quick car ride to Boston, New York, or Philadelphia. Each city has its own flavor and its own activities to see and do. Go out and explore. Have fun.

Don’t forget to read the first 2 parts of this series – Boston & New York City.

Madison -> New York City….Easy!

New York City is easy to get to from Madison, Connecticut.   Driving straight down route 95 will get you there in less than 2 hours.  Even better you can take the train directly from Madison (a 10 minute walk from the Scranton Seahorse Inn) to Grand Central after changing trains in New Haven.   If you use Madison as your home base Manhattan is a worthwhile day trip.   We also offer to store the bulk of your luggage if you want to check out with an overnight bag and visit Manhattan but don’t want to haul your suit cases.  Read about some of the highlights of this great city as described by our friend Dylan.

Part 2 of 3

New York, NY

Known as “The city that never sleeps”, New York is a quick 2.5 hours south of Madison. Although there are many things to do and see in the city, such as seeing a musical on Broadway or ice skating in Rockefeller Center, there are other activities that you are able to experience in New York. One of my favorite free activities in the city is to walk the Highline. The best part of the Highline is that you get spectacular views of New York City.

In addition, the Highline also hosts various events and contains diverse styles of art. Check out the calendar to see if there is an upcoming event that might interest you. Another place to visit in the city is the New York Transit Museum. At this site, you will learn about the history and the evolution of mass transportation in New York. One exhibit that is showcased at the museum is the “Fare Collection”, which highlights the history of how commuters have maneuvered and paid for the subway.

Similar to Boston, New York is also home to some top-notch universities. Check out New York University located off the 8th Street-NYU subway stop. If you are looking for a more traditional college campus, then come check out Columbia University, which is located off of the 1 train on 116th street.

New York is also home to some equally sports-enthused people. It is home to the Knicks(basketball), Rangers and Islanders(Hockey), Yankees and Mets(Baseball), and the Giants and Jets(Football).
