Catherine was the well educated daughter of an aristocratic family in Madison. Her early life was spent in Washington D.C. where her father was a well known figure in the government, but, at her father’s early death the family returned to Madison. The family lived in the house at the SE corner of the Boston Post Road and East Wharf Road, known as “The Generals Residence.” Catherine was known for her night time wanderings and was sometimes found perched on “Serpent Rock” mournfully waiting for her lover to return from the sea.
